Australian Energy Producers is seeking a proactive External Affairs Advisor to help build and maintain the political and strategic relationships needed to support informed policy settings for Australia’s natural gas and oil industry.

Based in Canberra and reporting to the General Manager External Affairs, you will provide research, analysis, coordination and high-quality written support across political engagement, ministerial and parliamentary briefings, stakeholder liaison and external affairs events.

This role will suit someone with experience in government, a political office, public policy, advocacy, industry associations, external affairs or government relations who enjoys working in a fast-moving stakeholder environment.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate political engagement opportunities, events, briefings, speeches, invitations and pre- and post-event materials.
  • Conduct research and analysis on policy and political issues relevant to Australia’s oil and gas industry and Australian Energy Producers’ members.
  • Prepare briefs, correspondence and communications for Ministers, departments, members, board directors and senior stakeholders.
  • Support preparation for parliamentary sitting periods, ministerial briefings, stakeholder reporting and external affairs activity.
  • Maintain accurate stakeholder information, manage task lists, schedule meetings and escalate issues or information requests in a timely way.

About You

You will bring sound judgment, strong written communication skills and the confidence to work professionally with internal and external stakeholders in a politically aware environment.

You have:

  • Strong stakeholder engagement, liaison and interpersonal skills, supported by discretion, diplomacy and professionalism.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, work under time pressure and deliver high-quality work with initiative and attention to detail.

Desirable:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, political science, communications, public policy or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of Australia’s energy sector, natural gas and oil industry, or broader public policy environment.
  • Experience supporting political engagement, ministerial or parliamentary processes, policy advocacy or stakeholder events.

Skills:

  • External affairs, government relations, public policy, political engagement or advocacy experience.
  • Strong analytical, policy research and briefing capability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High-level stakeholder engagement, liaison, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Sound judgment, discretion and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.
