Australian Energy Producers’ policy platform for the state election calls on the next Victorian Government to reset gas policies to unlock new supply, support investment and protect energy choice.
“The upcoming state election is an opportunity to secure Victoria’s energy and economic future by backing investment in new gas supply,” Australian Energy Producers Victorian Director Peter Kos said.
The platform outlines key reforms to unlock the state's natural gas resources, streamline project approvals and support manufacturing and reliable electricity.
“Victoria has enough undeveloped gas resources to meet the state’s demand for at least another 25 years – but only if those resources are developed,” Mr Kos said.
“Without new gas supply, Victorian households and businesses face higher energy costs, greater dependence on interstate and imported gas, and increased risks of gas and electricity shortfalls.
“The next Victorian Government must remove barriers to responsible gas development, streamline approvals and protect the right of households and businesses to choose gas.”
The election platform calls for four key reforms:
Victoria's natural gas industry supports around 40,000 jobs and contributes $22 billion in annual economic activity. Around four in five Victorian homes are connected to the gas network.
“Recent JWS Research polling found 75 per cent support developing Victoria’s own gas resource, while 82 per cent support consumer choice to keep using gas,” Mr Kos said.
“Restricting gas connections and appliance choice is at odds with what Victorians want. The next Victorian Government should scrap the Gas Substitution Roadmap and restore energy choice.”
