Media release – Australia’s oil and gas industry continues to take climate action
The voice of the Australian oil and gas industry said today’s announcement that Cooper Energy has achieved Climate Active Certification is another example of the industry walking the walk on climate change.
Climate Active is a partnership between the Australian Government and Australian businesses to drive voluntary climate action.
APPEA Chief Executive Andrew McConville said the certification means Cooper Energy has already achieved net zero emissions for its operations.
“Our industry is already doing the heavy lifting on climate change and this is just another example,” Mr McConville said.
“Our gas producers continue to walk the walk when it comes to cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Cooper Energy now joins City of Melbourne and Medibank Private as organisations with certification.
“Cooper Energy is just one example of the work our industry is doing to reduce emissions. A range of case studies of how the industry is taking practical action to support emissions reductions across the supply chain and leading research into innovative emissions reduction activities is highlighted in APPEA’s Industry Action on Emissions Reduction report.
“Australian Gas is also helping reduce emissions in Asia and this will continue for decades to come.
“The Australian Government estimates Australia’s LNG has the potential to lower emissions in LNG importing countries by around 170 million tonnes CO2 each year by providing an alternative to higher emissions fuels – the equivalent of almost one-third of Australia’s total annual emissions.
“Natural gas also plays an important role in balancing renewable energy and our industry is also leading the world in the practical development of carbon capture and storage and hydrogen to ensure a cleaner energy future.”
