Media Release: Oil and gas sector recognises McGowan Government’s support as Premier retires
Australia’s oil and gas industry recognises the long public service of outgoing Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan and his support of the sector to build a stronger economy for the state.
The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association today wished the Premier and Treasurer well with his retirement from politics after almost three decades in parliament.
APPEA WA Director Caroline Cherry said: “Congratulations to Mr McGowan on a political career that has helped build a stronger economy for the people of WA.
“Mr McGowan has demonstrated a strong understanding of the importance of natural gas to his state during his six years in power, with the sector employing thousands of West Australians and delivering over $1 billion to the state Budget annually.
“The industry appreciates the constructive working relationship with the Premier and his government during that time and its recognition of the importance of major energy supply projects for Australia’s domestic and regional energy security.
“This understanding also helped kickstart the state’s LNG Jobs Taskforce, allowing industry and government to work collaboratively to maintain the state’s status a leading gas exporter.
“It was also on display at the height of the pandemic’s restrictions when the government worked with the sector to ensure essential energy supply while keeping everyone safe.
“We look forward to that positive collaboration continuing under the next leader so WA can maintain its momentum towards net zero and a cleaner energy future.”
