New SDG roadmap to amplify industry’s emissions reduction efforts
IPIECA and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) recent announcement of an oil and gas sector roadmap for sustainable development is a welcome amplification to the industry conversation on a globally important topic.
The document, entitled Accelerating action: An SDG Roadmap for the oil and gas sector, is designed to expedite industry moves towards meeting the needs of the 2016 Paris Agreement and United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
APPEA members are keenly aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) goals, regarding important issues such as climate action, energy availability (particularly in relation to energy poverty) and efficiency as key business pillars. As such, the announcement of a new roadmap from a globally focused industry association such as IPIECA can guide Australia’s oil and gas industry as it further ramps ongoing efforts to contribute to a cleaner energy future in alignment with the UN SDGs.
The roadmap, which builds on existing documentation from both IPIECA and the WBCSD, highlights 10 priority SDGs from the UN’s list of 17 that the oil and gas sector can contribute to most significantly. Within these 10 goals, IPIECA and WBCSD identified eight impact opportunities where oil and gas companies can accelerate climate action over the next decade, covering key themes including climate, nature, and people.
‘Achieving the SDGs by 2030 will require unprecedented collaboration,” said IPIECA Executive Director Brian Sullivan. “The Roadmap aligns the oil and gas industry around the SDGs, presenting a shared vision for transformational action and a platform to form cross-sector partnerships and alliances to achieve the SDGs.”
APPEA is a member of IPIECA and proud to contribute to the development of its latest SDG roadmap. For more information, please click here.
