World Environment Day 2021
Today is World Environment Day, an event that has been raising awareness around protecting the environment since 1974.
An official UN Environment Programme, World Environment Day organisers have registered more than 1200 events across the world this year, from virtual gatherings and community clean ups to film and musical screenings. The theme of this year’s event, following on from air pollution in 2019 and biodiversity in 2020, is ecosystem restoration, with participants encouraged to become part of ‘Generation Restoration’.
The Australian oil and gas industry is subject to the highest environmental standards and works closely with regulators and communities at all levels of the approvals process.
APPEA revised its climate change policy principles earlier this year in order to support government policies and industry actions to achieve economy-wide net zero by 2050 and APPEA members have committed to emission reduction initiatives in line with government goals.
APPEA member companies work closely with the communities in which they work to ensure all environmental standards are met and environmental impacts are minimised.
Not only is the industry investing heavily in emissions abatement technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen, it also reduces emissions through coal-to-gas switching and supporting the uptake of intermittent renewables such as wind and solar. The industry is also involved in many community initiatives that help to protect the environment, such as fire abatement programs amd tree plantings.
