Chemical cleaning is a required activity that precedes internal visual inspections (IVI). The latter activities can only be effectively executed when hydrocarbons, and associated pyrophoric inorganic deposits, are cleaned from the surface of vessels and process equipment. Cleaning is often executed with steam dosed with surfactants.

On an offshore facility, cleaning solutions are usually required to either be contained or environmentally benign. This case history documents an event involving the use of a commonly used amine-oxide surfactant, used as a vapour-phase cleaning agent in steam. This type of chemistry was found susceptible to thermal oxidation, and in this instance converted Lauramine-oxide into Lauramine, a known marine pollutant. This contaminant was subsequently unknowingly discharged through drainage systems into the marine environment before being detected by a chemical monitoring program.

This webinar will detail the key events, responses, and lessons learned from this incident and highlight the broader challenges and potential solutions associated with vapour-phase chemical cleaning in the offshore oil and gas industry.

NOPSEMA are aware of the chemical contamination event and have required INPEX to share the details of the event with broader industry.

Presented by Daniel Hazell, Senior Environmental Advisor, INPEX

Daniel holds an Honours degree in Environmental Science and has worked for 20 years in the resources industries, including 15 years in the offshore petroleum industry. In his career, he has managed environmental approvals and overseen environmental compliance during the construction, commissioning and operation of several large infrastructure projects, both in mining and petroleum. In recent years, his focus has shifted to oil and chemical spill response, and offshore facility operations. Within the offshore facility operations, a core focus is offshore emissions and liquid discharges management. He is currently employed by INPEX Australia, as a Senior Environmental Advisor, supporting exploration and production activities in Australia.
